Osaka Castle Timeline
1496- Priest Renyo built a small temple called Osaka or Ishiyama Gobo in Osaka
1533- The head temple, which was formally Honganji Temple, was moved to the Osaka Temple
1570- A war erupted between Oda Nubunaga and the Osaka/Ishiyama Honganji Temple
1580-Oda Nubunaga makes peace with the temple, but unfortunately it burns down and the surrounding town burns down too.
1582- Oda Nubunaga dies
1583- Toyotomi Hideyoshi starts construction to build the Osaka Castle
1585- The Main Tower is completed
1587- The castle is completed
1598- Toyotomi Hideyoshi dies
1599- Toyotomi Hideyori, the son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, moves the power from Kushimi Castle to Osaka castle.
1600- Tokugawa Ieyasu gains power, and three years later calls himself Shogun
1614- Tokugawa Ieyasu attacks the Osaka Castle
1615- Summer War of Osaka begins, and Tokugawa destroys the Osaka castle
1620- Tokugawa Ieyasu rebuilds the castle
1626- The Main Tower is rebuilt
1629- The castle reconstruction is completed
1665- The main tower is struck by lightning and burns down
1868- Osaka castle is completely burned down in a battle between the Shogunate and the new government
1931- The main tower is rebuilt for a third time
1945- Old structures of the castle are destroyed during World War II
1953- Osaka Castle is recognized as a historic site
1931-1997- During this period the castle was modernized, an elevator was installed and information houses were built
